How to Add a “Table of Contents” into Topics!
This morning I want to show you how to insert a “Table of Contents” into your topics!
What and why is it?
It’s a small snippet of code that allows you to use the Headers (defined by the “Tt” icon in your post bit toolbar,) that helps organize your 1st post topic to make it easier to read, sort, and find things.
This is helpful for content topics, grow journals, educational bits, etc!
How to do it:
- “Table of Contents” ONLY works on the very first (1st) post in a topic. You can only insert it into the first post.
- Go to the very top of the post (if you are first creating it, or editing it,) and in the toolbar for your post, find the circle icon with the little + sign on it:
3. Click on “Insert Table of Contents” from the drop-down menu:
4. You should now see this code snippet at the top of your post while editing it:
Congratulations! The hard part is now done! You can save your post or edit at this point, and now I’ll show you how to add entries to the index!
Adding Entries
Adding entries to the index is done using the Headings tool in your toolbar, which looks like a “Tt” icon:
Think of Headings like sections of a book index:
- Heading 1: The main title of your document (e.g., So-and-So Grows Dream Beans).
- Heading 2: The main chapters or sections (e.g., Germination Milestone).
- Heading 3: Smaller parts inside those sections (e.g., Germination setup, methods, temps, etc)
So in this post for example; if I edit my topic and highlight "How to Add a “Table of Contents” at the very top of the post, and select Heading 1:
Once you select Heading 1, you can see the size of the text has physically increased and it’s now in bold:
Now let’s add in some “main chapters” using Heading 2:
Now if save my post (or create the topic if this is brand new?) You will now see the Table of Contents on the right side of the screen (on desktop,) or using the sidebar button at the bottom of the screen if you are on mobile.

Each “Heading” under your table of content is a link that takes you specifically to that place in the 1st post.
So if you have a lengthy post, or if you want to edit all of your Milestone updates into the first post (making for an ultra clean journal that still allows everyone to comment after the 1st post,) you can set your journals up to read like a book with sections!
