The GOAT training method
Since ive learned this method, I haven’t topped a plant in years. When I first learned it I did some sid by side tests and tying down produces a bigger plant every time. No down time to heal. Especially with autos, a little goes a long way!
I couldn’t agree more, I only found it from you all on these forms, but as soon as I did, I stopped topping, and I have never looked back!
This is the type of lst I was referring to over on my painted lady topic. I try not to drop too many pics on others topics but here are a couple from before I made it to afn.
A tip I picked up a long the way somewhere is the counter wire or anchor. You can see it in the first pic pretty well. It just ties off opposite of the bend and attaches around the base. Takes any pressure off the roots and limits risk of disturbing them.
I use to anchor my plants from the opposite side as well. when I’m pulling with wire I get it helps anchor, with garden staples I am only applying downward pressure, not pulling over, there is no risk of disturbing roots, or anything like that I promise. I just find it easier to use the staples then pulling with wire. I use both methods when I have to, but I prefer the staples.
When this young they are so flexible! I think anchoring the base from the opposite is smart, Ive used it myself when necessary. But I really don’t think it’s necessary if you have a strong root system. The only damage I ever had a problem with when tying plants down or training, is snapping branches. Usually not being careful and
vng like a bull in a china shop, not from what I’m actually doing to the plants. But you are right it’s good practice to be better safe than sorry. I guess I just have faith in myself at this point.
Day 17…
She already popped up, so I tied her back down by adjusting the garden staple. It will take a wk or two of this before I let I grow upwards again.
Day 18…
Popped back up again, this will probably be daily for at least another week. This time I added a support at the base pulling from the opposite side so as to protect the roots. I also added another staple to keep her down in case she pops out of the first staple.
It’s 2026… did you ASK her? Or are you just assuming?
They could be a fem projecting male for all you know.

Day 21…
3 wks old today! At this point the lower branches have reached up and are higher than the main growth tip, so I will let her grow up towards the light again now. Eventually she will be lollipopped and spread out if she needs it.
Nice work man! The bend & staple pics are very helpful for anyone wanting to give that method a try. Very clear what’s going on. The everyday pics are cool since you can see what changes and how you’ve been adjusting. Solid tutorial.
Day 26…
Took a few leaves that were obstructing light and or airflow. Top dressed with Craft Blend by BAS and watered it in.
