Welcome everyone to my grow! It’s been a bit since I’ve done a journal, and the new site has me lurking a bit more. Still figuring things out as I type lol. I see some familiar names so starting to ease into our new home. The last year of growing has been a struggle, 3 grows with issues start to finish. The only positive was at least I’ve finally figured it out. Lesson learned not all medium is equal. I had bought plain peat moss and added perlite from HD. Was only $25 and was made by the same company that makes pro mix, which is what I used. I figured I’d save the money and buy this. Well long story short they didn’t buffer the cheap stuff so soil pH was like 4 and I was using living soil. Took me until the beginning of the 3rd grow to pin point the problem. Other variables in the 1st two grows that I thought were the issue. Luckily I was able to get a bunch of pro mix hp cheap so good for a while. Now I can go back to growing like normal.
I just made my 1st order from Nancy’s Own. I want to thank @Nancys_Own for adding another pack of Orange Warp so I could grab another pack. Also added a discount code! I will be growing Orange Warp & Ska Skunk(THCV) in 5 gallon living soil pro mix hp with Craft Blend. Here is a list of what I’m using.
Mars Hydro FC 4000 with UVA/IR
AC Infinity Controller AI+
AC Infinity 6” intake/exhaust
AC Infinity 9” oscillating fan
AC Infinity Cloudforge T3
Craft Blend
Pro mix HP
Autopots
RO/Tap 75/25
Sprout seed starter
Recharge, Silica, Girl Flower Power
Time to germinate with my newest gadget. I got a little germination thing I saw on YouTube.
It’s a metal box you plug in and heat to ideal temperature. I got a 2nd piece for additional seed(s). I will normally do 2 at a time. 1 on top 1 on bottom, but could do multiple if you can keep them organized. I know it seems silly, but this is perfect for me. I normally have to use my tent to be able to heat. I just use a heat mat so not at optimum temp but was warm. Now they are at optimum temperature, and now I can get my bags ready, or whatever else without Interfering with germination. I have had off and on luck germinating so was another reason to take a shot. They were sold out of them, but they have a scratch & dent which was instock. Got it for $45 + $15 for 2nd tray. Go t $5 off at checkout so $55 worth the risk. Can’t find any damage to my unit so like brand new. Company is called Root Nerds check them out.
Put a paper towel, or in my case makeup pad down and put 5ml of water. Place seed on pad.
That brings us up to date. I have them a week apart because Orange Warp can go a little longer from what Nancy told me. I need them to finish as close together as possible because I dry in my tent. Going to try and keep this as simple as possible. I’m very interested to see what this THCV is like. I love a focused energetic high so this should be right up my alley. Well not much else for now but to let them do their thing. I’ll update once they get a little bigger till then… stay lifted!
I do find it a bit interesting in the different methods of germination. I saw a similar version to the one you have here.
I was gonna say that I have simplified it, but that’s not really it. In a way, I have simplified it, I don’t worry about it.
I never did do the paper towel method. It just really never made much sense to me. I’ve done a lot of the other stuff though, mainly shaking in her old up sandpaper and soaking!
I don’t do any of that stuff anymore. My germination toy is the AC Infinity Humidity Dome with light and heating pad. One of the keys to the success is the rooting puck that I use. BAS switched to these Coco Coin pucks because broke down in the pot. But for germination, it’s that they retain water very well. I hydrate the pucks in a Rootwise solution. After hydration, I squish the pucks to close off the hole in the center. I just lay the seed on its side, lightly press into the puck and then pull over material to cover it.
I have a little bit of water in the bottom to keep up the humidity with all vents closed, lights turned on and heating pad set if needed. The day after everyone’s seed hole pops off, I open some vents, but still misted the Dome. Within 5 days, they’re planted in their final pot, unless I’m sexing some regulars. Usually by that time the roots are just beginning to come through the puck fabric.
I’ve had one failure since starting to use that procedure.
And I really got that Set up just because of wanting to do clones. The only difference with clones is that I add SST along with the Rootwise and squish the puck after I insert the clone in the hole.
I have the coco coins you recommended, but for some reason I keep having them die last grow. So I just went old school straight into final pot. I will revisit them, but wanted to get off on the right foot.
When and if you’re ready to try again with the pucks, just let me know and we’ll discuss where you should direct your attentions so it won’t happen again.
I’m sure it was me lol. 1 was going good I may have let it get too dry. Seeds were older so could be a factor too. I do like the pucks tho easy to work with.
I’ve been getting 100% germ rates since I switched to Root Riot plugs. As long as temps are good they hold the perfect amount of moisture and it’s set it and forget it. I have a humidity some with lights to add a little warmth.because you never have to handle the delicate little tap transplanting the sprout into its final pot is as easy as it gets. Just my opinion. But it is shared by many others.
The main issue was needing to use my tent. With this device I can put it anywhere. Keeps light out and perfect temps. I was going to use cubes, but WildBill told me about the coco coins. I like those, but still learning with them. I didn’t use them this time because wanted a clean start, so I danced with who brought me. I over thinks stuff sometimes so less was more. I worry about over watering which probably is opposite of what’s true. If I had the cubes I would definitely try them. I have almost 70 coco coins and only do 2 at a time for now. Gonna be a while before I get more. If I get my hands on some I will give them a shot for sure!
Very interested in Varins, even though they aren’t medicine for me, I’m Interested in all of the cannabinoids and their uses, and the cultivation/processing/etc. of them.
I had success with root riots, but they only came in a bag of 50 and I had a 2x2 at the time so in a couple of years they were moldy and I had to throw most of them out.
Root riot is a good product, if I were growing more plants I would go back to them for sure.
Germing in cheap rockwool is easy, just buffer them the day before and when ready they can be put in any media. Plus they have an unlimited shelf life.
I would use a product like that especially when germing multiple strains, id love to have like 10 of emfor different strains! I wish there was a heat matt that worked that way that I could put under my prop tray but every heat mat I’ve used is way too warm for my liking
I gave them some silica last night, and some Recharge the night before. I hope to get the Autopots running sooner rather than later. They will get a good drink tonight kinda dry when I checked them. That’s about it for now till next time… stay lifted!
Let’s go baby! I’ve been wanting to see some Nancy’s Own grown for a while! Best of luck. Autopots you say? I have seen some monster in autopots! Can’t wait!
