SMT Pick & Place in Action - How Grow Lights Are Built

If anyone’s curious, this is how the LEDs are placed onto the circuit boards before they head into the reflow oven.

Thought it’d be cool to share a little behind the scenes look at the manufacturing process that makes high end grow lights possible.

One thing most people never think about is that the number of LEDs on a fixture, or the number of different LED types being used, and how it has a huge impact on production time. Every different diode type requires its own feeder positions, programming, and placement operations. Even when the machine is assembling multiple boards at once, more complex designs simply take longer to build, and the tighter you pack the diodes the less margin for error and the smaller your tolerances are, the tighter the tolerances the better your equipment needs to be.

The first video shows one of our more complex boards with multiple diode types being populated. The second shows a much simpler board with fewer LED types and fewer total components. Simpler programming, fewer placement operations, and faster production.

It’s a pretty impressive piece of machinery, and without it, none of us would be growing under modern LED fixtures.
