Let’s go!!!
There she goes!! ![]()
Just a small update. There was still a thin membrane from the seed shell stuck on the cotyledon last night so I misted it with water and popped it off after a few minutes.
She’s opened up and is soaking up rays now. Plus my cover crop has started coming in so it looks like this grow is well under way now
Just wanted to make a small update
Seedling is doing well, and cover crop is coming in well. Was worried that I might have drown them but after I misted the surface pretty heavily the other day it seems to have sped the germination up on most of the cover crop.
Ive been misting the top of the soil with about 1/4 gallon of water every other day just to be safe. Not dampening off so far so I think Im just gonna keep going at this pace unless the surface starts drying out faster which Im sure in a week or 2 the cover crop will start transpiring more but by then I will probably be doing my first cut back and mulching. I think thats all for today.
Edit
Just heaft the pot and felt the bottom of the bag, its pretty dry down there so I took a half gallon of plain water with a little surfactant and dumped it in the saucers and put the bag in, good thing its definitely not hydrophobic as it immediately wicked up half that. Slowed down a bit but Im gonna watch closely to make sure it wicks the rest. This is kinda how I was gonna approach this if it happened anyway
So I accidentally watered to field capacity…
Oops.
Top of the pot is fine though. It did drip slowly for about 20 minutes. But I did top water with a surfactant too because the pot was lighter than when I bagged it up. Im sure it’ll be fine.
Time for a weekly update. If any of you experienced journalers know, is there threadmarks or tagging I can do to let people jump over the piddly shit like. Im not sure how it works or if its even a thing on discourse.
Anyway today marks 1 week since breaking ground.
Cover crop is coming in strong, the cereal grain in the blend is definitely growing fast as hell, came home from work and they went from just barely over the straw mulch to some being 4-5" tall. I already chopped those down. I really just want the nitrogen and phosphorus the clover crank out when chopping and dropping anyway.
Seedling is doing very well. A little slow growing but I think it reached a height were its happy with the light. I have it at 20% hanging 24-30 inches above the light and its basically stopped reaching for it at about 4" tall. Seems like its putting its energy into node development now. I can just see new leaves starting to develop.
Pot is still heavy from the watering 3 days ago and I check under the straw daily and the top soil is still moist so the cover crop and mulch are working well.
Heres some pictures and environmental info.
Those didnt load in the order selected but whatever ![]()
So I had a little extra cash and I know that Im going to need to top dress so I got some buildasoil craft blend, kashi gold, and buildaflower top dress kit. I won’t need the build a flower till I flip to 12/12 but getting it now just because I can.
The plan is to apply craft blend in 3-4 weeks. Gonna veg and let the plant really fill out to get the most out of 1 plant. I figured that will take at least 2 months. And I will be apply Kashi gold during the chop and drops.
Edit
I also got some mosquito bits as well, fungus gnats have shown up but that was expected
Did my first chop and drop today. Most of everything should grow back but the cover crop was starting to get a little too thick and lush. I dont want them stealing from the KK.
I had to move the straw out of the way but I chopped within .5in of the soil and watered and covered it back up with some fresh straw, then watered that a little bit. Trying to make a sandwich of soil, green mulch, and straw.
Edit:
Im sure the fungus gnats will build up their populations with decomposing plants now, but I plan on giving them a drench with a mosquito bit tea in a couple days, and then every spray down after will have mosquito bits in it. For the next month so it should squash that problem
So I gotta say Thank You! again to @Antonio. The freebies are appreciated so much. And i love the pens! That was a incredible way to stealth ship!
Its time for another weekly update!
Week 2 down the hatch
KK is just starting to pull into full veg, developing the 2nd node after the first true leaves. Been keeping the top misted with water to help draw up microbes to break down the chop and drop. Was a little light last night so I did a full spray down with about .8 gallons of water, now the pot has that anchored, heavy feeling again.
Looking insanely healthy. Ive never had a plant this shade of green and Im loving it. Its like a emerald to forest green. Looks super healthy and lush.
Thought I would do a small update.
She’s really starting to speed up now. Roots must be established enough now to enter full veg mode. Leaving the light on 20% I also raised it 6in a few days ago. Im really starting to understand how this oversized and over powered light is really affecting how the young plant responds. I think I have really been blasting my grows from the beginning, and with the exhaust fan running too high and the lights on too bright I think I have been forcing my plants to constantly be transpiring and photosynthesizing at rates that are just too fast, which is why I always get the brown spots and crispiness by mid flower.
Im going to try to keep everything dialed as low as I possibly can this grow and see how this one plays out. If I notice any low light problems I will just bump up by 10% and monitor. The only thing Im not a fan of right now is this super tight node spacing. That’s the reason I raised the light and kept it the same power, I want it to stretch more but it doesnt seem to change
I know that this is a short compact plant from start to finish, and doesn’t even stretch that much but I want larger node spacing. But Im not adjusting light levels. Im just gonna let it do its thing.
Your welcome bro!
I’m just happy I could do something for you, while the USA side of the DP business seems to be a bit lacking to say at least…
anyway, hope you enjoy them and if you come to pop some of them in the future, please make sure to tag me
Cheers
Looking good bro, healthy and all! ![]()
So my BuildASoil stuff came, 2 days early too. I will end up having to get BuildABloom too I think. I mainly got BuildAFlower as a source of compost and new microbes not knowing Kashi Gold is an EM1 inoculant, i thought it just made microbes work more efficient. Oh well in about 2 weeks I will be doing my first veg top dress of craft blend and Kalshi gold, and will be doing a chop and drop then too.
I did however inoculate my older soil and gave it a light top dressing. Trying to keep this soil healthy. Since all Im doing is trying to build it up and keep microbial life stable and working all Im doing is managing a cover crop and chop and dropping, or covering it with new soil. Trying to build up quantity over this grow to move to a 3x3 bed.
Since a cover crop dont need much light to survive I just have it under a fluorescent light on my work bench for now, measured about 150 umol so its plenty for these guys. Don’t have that light on a timer but I plug it in when I get up and unplug it when I get home from work which is roughly 14-18 hours of light. Eventually the blend in here will flower, but I should be covering them or chopping them before that.
Did another chop and drop today. Was getting a little overgrown. May be jumping the gun here but what I did was pull 90% of the straw out chopped, layered with Kashi gold, then craft blend followed by just enough build a flower to cover. Watered in with 1 gallon through the sprayer over about 2.5 hours, was time for a good watering anyway. Had mosquito bit tea and a surfactant as well. Put the straw back and gave the straw a light misting with like the lat 5-10% of that gallon.
So amended and primed the green mulch for decomposition. I really need to get a bag of plain worm castings for when I do this. This is how Im reinoculating the soil with beneficial microbes is by adding a bit of mulch and castings and watering them in. So I should be pretty set for the next month of grow, and Im not too worried about the build a flower, its npk ratios is supplemental to say the least .1% P and 1%K isnt going to throw anything off.
Girl liked the minor dry back and from Sunday you can tell the cover crop did too.
Every day this girl gets bigger and bigger. She got way bigger. Or at least the leaves rolling up on week 3 and shes almost pumped out 6 nodes already!
Forgot to add in the last post
Ordered everything else I need for this grow (and at least 1 future grow) from BuildASoil today.
Last things:
BuildABloom
Rootwise Microbe Complete.
With everything I have now, all I gotta do is build up my living soil stock as the grow progresses and I should have everything I need besides the 3x3 Grassroots bed.
So far Im really liking this company.
Since I never made a formal Week 3 update here it is
Watered Saturday with 3/4 of a gallon of water, pot was getting a little light so I decided to give it a good drench with some quillaja. Seems like it needed it. The cover crop responded positively and so did the KK, I figured she would droop but she perked up a lot.
Will be topping soon I think Im gonna top at the 8th node, I want that extra height. Other than that theres nothing new.
