Cubensis mushrooms for medical use

Welcome to my first attempt to grow my own magic mushrooms!

Psilocybin containing mushrooms are usually from the Cubensis strain. They are well known for causing psychedelic trips, that unless you have actually experienced, can be difficult to explain. There’s a bit of fear and confusion about magic mushrooms, what with bad trips and poisoning, so I wanted to enlighten you about some of the good things about them.

They aren’t just taken for recreational purposes… they have a place in medicine, treating depression, PTSD, addiction issues, and lots more. Nowdays, you can grow your own just like we do with Cannabis. No need to forage in the woods and get sick!

I take them for Cluster Headaches, a chronic condition that causes the MOST painful headaches 3-4x a day, everyday since 2019.

They are the most severe pain known to mankind, often called ‘suicide headaches’, and in surveys, childbirth rates 7.4/10 while Cluster Headaches are 9.6/10.

They aren’t migraines… these are far worse.

Conventional treatments have ranged from Blood pressure meds, anti-epileptics, overuse of migraine meds (and I have tried every type of migraine med around), heavy doses of long term steroids, anti-psychotics, multiple nerve blocks and Botox all over the head, neck and shoulders.

Nothing really gets rid of them… maybe reducing the frequency, intensity and duration a tiny bit, but I was still getting attacks every single day.

Regular GPs know nothing about them, and I have to see Neurologists, who know little more than I have found through my own research.

It killed my social life, affected my family life, and I’ve been sacked from work numerous times because of all the time I take off.

By April 2025 the attacks were probably the worst ever… up to 8 a day.

It was living hell and I was at my wits end…

Then someone at work said I should try magic mushrooms… “they’ll re-wire your brain…” she kept saying to me.

She used to microdose them for anxiety, and they worked really well for her.

I haven’t done mushrooms since 1992 back in Koh Pang Yang… wild times indeed, but I didn’t think I’d ever be in a situation where I’d take them again.

I did a bit of research, and Yale University had published some research showing very promising results for the treatment of Cluster Headaches.

It involved taking a ‘pulse’ dose of about 1.5 to 2g, 3 times, 5 days apart, then repeating this 3 months later.

My friend was so lovely to give me all the mushrooms I needed to get better, and I got on with it.

After the first 3 doses, the pain intensity and frequency dropped to 2-3 attacks a week, rather than per day! I vomited each time, occasionally having to hide in my grow tent so my kids wouldn’t hear me!

After the second cycle, the pain went away completely for a few weeks, then returned, so I took the mushrooms 1-2x a week, and they stayed away!

The vomiting stopped because I found out about ‘lemon tek’, where you mix finely ground mushrooms into a citrus juice like lemon juice for 30-60 mins.

The vomiting might also have stopped because it turns out that the first batch I got might have been slightly mould affected… the first time I tried lemon tek was with the old batch, I used the juice of 2 large fresh lemons, then spewed my guts up, such a strong acid taste!!!.

I changed to orange juice because of the taste, but that was with the 2nd batch, and never vommed again.

The old mushrooms were a South African strain… whereas the ones I used from the start of the second cycle were Koh Samui Special Strain (KSSS)… what a coincidence!

I have been on the mushrooms regularly since then and my life has changed! I’ve heard of cluster headache patients who say they’d rather lose both legs and arms rather than have the relentless attacks, so getting on the shrooms once or twice a week is a pleasure.

I can’t keep asking my friend for supplies… she refuses to charge a penny for them, and I go through loads of them!

You might wanna try them too, either for fun or medicinal reasons, but you are a bit unsure of the effects?

I don’t get much more hammered than if I have a good smoke… in fact I smoke weed much less when I’m shrooming. It can be as intense as you want, but I don’t want to meet God or lose my ego… I like being in control, nice visuals, enhanced colours and sounds etc.

There are levels of how your experience will be, from sub perceptive (microdosing) to full blown level 5 to 7 trips… I go to about level 1.5 to 2.

It took a few goes to get it right, but now I quite enjoy them :winking_face_with_tongue:

This video might explain the recreational effects better…

Anyway, back on point, I’m gonna grow some mushrooms!

I have 2 syringes of live culture, you can buy live cultures or spores quite easily (for microscopy purposes) . Livecultures work quicker than spores.

Apetar (a cross of Albino Penis Envy and Golden Teacher) on the top, and Koh Samui Super Strain (KSSS) below.

I chose KSSS cos I know they work for me, Golden Teacher is a classic, and Penis Envy is a legendary strong strain.

Here’s a close up of the magical mushroom live culture…

You can see some cloudy mycelium in there.

I have inoculated a couple of sterile bags of Red Sorghum grain…

There’s a black rubber injection port at the bottom there, and a white air filter at the top.

These can be bought from any standard mushroom growing shop, and you could try other grains like millet, popcorn, or even Uncle Ben’s rice!

You just have to be VERY sterile about everything. EVERYTHING needs wiping down with Isopropyl alcohol, work surfaces, the bags, your gloves, the syringes, etc…

Here’s a closer look at the grain. A bit like smaller sized popcorn kernels…

I chose Red Sorghum grain becuase it inoculates easily and colonises quickly, and the mushies like it allegedly.

My friend makes her own popcorn jars and sterilises it in the pressure cooker. aka ‘Popcorn tek’.

As I said, I am new to this, but over the next few weeks the grain should get colonised by white mycelium, I’ll be looking out for any contamination during that period. Any funny colours, and it’s time to start again.

Once fully colonised, I will then transfer the grain into a grow tub with some Coco and some other shit, which I will get into, and make some medicine for my chronic Cluster Headaches.

Let’s see how it goes, please join me on my quest!

Hi @Teetee

Good luck with the mushroom project, I have only grown them from the shroom kits , never make my own but some of my crew are real shroom heads , maybe I start a grow later the year.

I’ve been very tempted quite a few times into looking into growing my own mushrooms.
I think I’m still a bit apprehensive from my first and only encounter with mushrooms when I was a teenager on a ‘road trip’ with my cousin. The only problem is I don’t remember much… We also had beer, Jack Daniels and I think Acapulco Gold.
Everything was pretty much of a blur until on the 4th day of a long weekend, I remember waking up on the beach on the Gulf Coast.
I think that’s cool as hell but it helped you so much!

I also use mushies for severe headaches, called “cervicogenic headaches.”

It’s essentially a migraine that begins in my C-Spine (I had a c-spine injury, with a broken vertebrae and nerve damage back in the day), and travels into my head…. They can come on in an instant, at any time. 1g of dried mushrooms make the pain tolerable, 2.5g takes care of it completely within the hour…..

Anything above that, and I’m just in it for the good time

BTW…..when I don’t have psilocybin mushies, I order Amanitas…. They’re a muscimol based mushroom, so totally different. They’re psychoactive, but not hallucinogenic. 3-4 dried grams will take care of the headache well…..although it does come with a heavy relaxation….which can be quite nice…:mushroom:

Seriously?whoa..thays fantastic..Just interesting because I can’t do them any more due to body load,MS,nerve issues maybe and pain.really wild with the body load I can’t do more than a gram..hell even less than that I get too much body load..a d I’ve tried multiple strains on the mellow and medium side..so..lovely journey however :call_me_hand:

Very interesting to know about the effects on the cluster headaches. I’ve been growing them on and off in monotubs. One good tub can get you 3-4 flushes and last quite awhile. Me like for anxiety and recreational. I’ve grown PE, GT, JMF, B+ and Costa Rican. All with decent results.

I’ll follow along the grow and chip in experiences.

The mid '70s to '85 was all about psychedelics for me. My friend was one of the first to cultivate indoors.

Then maybe >5 years ago I tried microdosing shrooms (and later lsd). After several months (each) I percieved no benefit so didn’t continue.

Reports of people successfully treating major depression became more common.

Psychedelics with psychotherapy for ptsd began to reemerge for the first time in over 40 years.

So did charlatan, self-proclaimed “shaman” doing damage and sometimes outright crime.

My old friend, dying of cancer and aporoved for MAID recieved clinical guidance and small doses to “get the feel”, then a large ego-disolving dose of mushrooms to take on his own at home. He said that everything now made sense and he felt that he was ready to transition.

A family friend, a musician and choir director suddenly went deaf. After a few years of moping around she started psychotherapy with shrooms, and started directing choir again!

I decided to try minidosing PE starting with ½gm. A little buzz but no therapeutic effect.

1gm felt like weed and uplifted me through the next day or two.

2 grams. Not tripping but got some wavy walls and mild cev.

At that 2gm dose all physical pain was eliminated and the next couple of days were much more comfortable. Anxiety and depression improved for the following week as well.

I think ptsd needs derp trips and facilitation by a professional therapist trained in psychedelic therapy. Very expensive to have a therapist with you for 6 hours.

I could get to ego dissolution and even tolerate occasional bad trips in my youth.

I’ve become the plants, the animals, the universe, traveled infinity in a moment, met god and had my mind blown open already. I can’t unknow those things so I don’t need to do it again.

Pain management (and a few giggles) are where I’m headed with shrooms.

Been a few months. It’s time.

It’s also all about the positive intentions you put into the experience prior to the dosage. It’s also helps to do lions main with it to help with the repair and recovery of affected parts of the brain.

I also was listening to a podcast with Shanga Los Shaping Fire - Podcast - Apple Podcasts

Where it’s been found that CBD helps with neurological repair in the brain. So of unrelated but a fact I wasn’t aware of.

You are absolutely correct. Set and setting, especialy at hallucinogenic doses.

Going into the experience with intention means you’ve given it thought, you know what to ask of your body-mind, perhaps spirit if inclined, and of the mushroom. It means you will reflect afterwards to understand and integrate the experience.

It is not unlike the guidance of a shaman in the days before and after the trip. Its not unlike many counseling processes in fact.

Thanks everyone for your thoughts and experiences… I hope I haven’t triggered too many dormant dopamine receptors out there!

It’s amazing how we’re remembering things that happened 30-40 years ago, that are still TOTALLY clear memories.

@WildBill… a 4 day bender ending up on a beach is the stuff of Hollywood legend! I personally know that feeling of waking up on a beach wondering how the fuck I got there… Hadrin beach on Koh Pang Yang 1992 after a couple of full moon parties… happy daze!

I saw a Weed dispensary in Washington State, advertising not just all the usual cannabis treats, but also mushrooms… just imagine… you could walk out of… let’s say… the White House, and go get some mushies https://5minuteweeddc.com/

@frankthetank I feel for you Brother. I thought my cluster headaches were cervicogenic, but the Neurologists just aren’t interested in finding the cause. I had a few theories, ranging from inflammation of the Spheno Palatine Ganglion, sinus injuries, neck issues from poor posture, chiropractor injury, exposure to pyrethrin, even a dental implant (that I had removed to no avail grrrr)… isn’t it mental that mushrooms have literally saved our lives!

The ‘Specialists’ just want to make their cash. They actually want to keep you in pain so that they can continue to charge. I used to get a shitload of Botox and nerve blocks every 3 months… at a cost of almost $900 each time. Why would the Specialist want to refer me for investigations that would provide more relief, and lose me as a customer???

@MasonJarOG and @VitaMan thank you for your attendance, and I hope, assistance. I bet you have tons of stories to tell!

Guys… would you say there’s much difference between the strains you’ve had or would you say that the experience is governed more by the environment and user state of mind?

Everyone I know has remarked at my amazing recovery from Cluster Headaches… and rather than admit taking wacky Magic Mushrooms, I’ve been saying that I have been taking high doses of Lions Mane and Turkey Tail… @MasonJarOG funny you say taking Lion’s Mane would help with repair while the Cubes deal with the neuroplasticity… what would be your recommended dose?

Just to finish… a bit of bad news… I checked out the grain bag for the Apetar this morning, and it’s gone bad… dammit.

So that’s gone in the trash, grrrrr.

I was very sure to keep everything sterile, but to be absolutely sure next time, I’ve bought a still air box, and when that arrives, I’ll try again with a new bag. @IamPepe I know you’re using an all in one bag, but what grain is in it?

How do you spawn yours @MasonJarOG ?

Cheery bye, and see you soon!!

I was prescribed some CBG oil for my Clusters… it’s supposed to reduce inflammation in the brain, but I’m not sure if it did anything for me.

I tried cbg flower and found no positive effects…weather smoked or ingested.

These two are very likely…

Mine come from a mechanical injury high up in my c spine… Which caused degeneration of the disks. Meaning, things are a tad “loose” up there, I can feel and hear movement of vertebrae. When I do anything to cause strain to that area (literally anything involving work with my arms extended, or twisting motions, or carrying weight), I run the risk of aggravating that injury…which causes a spasm high up in my neck/base of my skull area…the spasm quickly effects the nerves in the brain stem, and voila… a headache that will make you question your place on this earth.

One way to mitigate these, is I try to have perfect posture… I’m fairly stiff, I turn at the waist if possible. Driving sucks because you must turn your head…so I imagine poor posture could contribute…

And my recommendation is to stay away from chiropractors…

The docs are of no help, unless you take their pills… which I don’t. And I don’t trust them to do surgery that high up… one could easily become a quadriplegic with too much fidgeting up there.

Strains… the only differences I’ve noted are in strength.

Also, I’ve found Amanitas to work well… They interact with the GABBA system, so good for nerve pain… And are fully legal. Don’t buy the gas station ones, though.

Wow, so so similar. What side of your head is the monster… mine’s on the left.

Right side… as are most of my injuries… I took a hard enough hit on my right side in 2009 that it still fucking hurts  :smokeout:

Man, we’re a busted up group! :man_facepalming:
@frankthetank
I pretty much heard the same thing from the doctors. No real options in my book.

Oh the irony!
The government that put in the conditions we have now, won’t let us correct the problem ourselves Naturally, since they seem to fail to do so.
Enough of that crap! Let’s go to a different subject, so the rest of my day’s not Ruined! :man_facepalming:

Does anyone here know of a place they have personal experience with website that I can order something to see if it works for me instead of growing my own and see if I like it. Something to dip my toes in like infused chocolate.

I grow my own psilocybin…

I order Amanitas and blue lotus (not a mushroom) from here…

Some people say that a cube is a cube. That is like saying a bud is a bud.

The biggest difference within cubensis is potency. Beyond that is more subtle; some are more stimulating, some more relaxing, some more visual, some more spiritual…

For cubensis the happy middle for me are PE variants. I don’t have to consume much to get there (compared to GT for example) and the effects are balanced.

Do you boil them first to reduce the toxins? I thought the trip from this species was pretty rough, violent nausea being the primary problem. Do they not make you sick?

They can be made edible and non halucinogenic by slicing them up and boiling them, but I have never tried that. When they flush here in the fall, there are too many other wild mushrooms t hat I like available, so I have never bothered. :slightly_smiling_face:
