New journey with rockwool

Hi growmies, im starting my journey with rockwool and automated systems this time, previously used coco as medium decided to go for rockwool becouse of 420autoflower.

I would appreciate any tips, currently iam on 15 days mark i will add some pictures if anything is wrong feel free to tell your opinion, atm. giving only calmag and novamax at 1ec and 5.5pH. bottom rw cube is more wet top one dry somewhat

One of my plants looks kinda droopy wondering if shes not very happy about something

Thanks

Welcome @eck077!

I know nothing about rockwool, I’m a soil guy. But hi!!! :waving_hand:

New to rockwool as well.

In presoaking a bunch of cubes I noticed that if I placed a fully saturated cube on another one there was a draining of water.

This implies that a taller rather than wide array will have more range of humidity.

At some value is the optimum growing range of dryback.

Is there a desired value and a way to measure or monitor it?

Good luck with the grow! I’ll be watching, especially if you are planning to try the 420autiflowef method!

Welcome!

I combined rockwool with hydroton in a continuous drip system and had amazing results but moved to coco for simplicity and easier access.

Don’t let rockwool dry out, keep it moist but not soaking. If it dries out it might not distribute liquid evenly.

I found the timing was tricky but once in hydroton the drainage was good enough for continuous drip which eliminated that problem.

Where you stacked and taped the cubes looks too wet to me, condensation means not enough air flow? Fertigate slowly and often two hours after lights on until 2 hours prior to lights out. You would no believe how much water a cube can hold. A 6 inch cube holds nearly a gallon. you want to fertigate very slowly so the capillary action wets the entire cube. Then the water migrating down in the cube pulls oxygen in for the roots.

Don’t lift the cubes until harvest day, it just breaks too many roots.

Ps. You want 20% volume run off every day you fertigate.

I heard guys saying rock wool with coco in 5 gal containers was a inside tip.

tape is removed for airflow now, gonna switch soon from handfeed to automated , will see how they react

do you guys run exhaust 24/7 ?

Yes.

Hi, little update , plants are now 3weeks or 21days old from sprout.

Main stem tied down with a zip ties rn cuz i dont have another ideas and i find that better than putting something into rockwool and damaging roots, is this okay?

Would love to hear anything of how they looking rn any comments are welcome.

Noticed some algae and white fuz on top of RW, could i spray peroxide on top is that safe?

Tips also are welcome.

Welcome, welcome, don’t worry about algae, however the zip tie will outgrow its position very quickly. I prefer to use 3mm copper wire which i stake into the rock and move daily to sculpt the plant in the direction I want the top to grow/face. Don’t worry about slicing roots with the wire, 420 and I have never had issues with growth etc using it.

Could you help me please with feeding schedule ? im wondering if short pulses of 30-40ml is good idea? for example first feed 2hours after lights on 6-8 short pulses of 30-40ml each every 5 mins 6 or 8 times, then second, third, fourth, fifth feed the same, this is the biggest question for me rn

I have seen monsters grown that way. I don’t have the space and a bad back is [quote=“MasonJarOG, post:8, topic:346, full:true”]

That all sounds very complicated, I water by hand until about day 15. After that it’s all automated, lights on 24/7 and fertigatied 5 times daily. Each watering is for 10mins which is about 7litres of water. I just check the ph/ec daily. I like to pump out the res when the ph/ec starts climbing and start afresh. This is all for a standard 4” cube stacked on 1 and a half Hugos.

Do you use hugo 15x15x15cm (5.9inch) cubes or the bigger ones? how much water comes from the feeding pipe in that 10mins for one plant? i need to create similar schedule like yours or 420autoflower to not drown or underwater so anything would help me

Yesn exhaust @24/7.

Heat and humidity in day and humidity at night.

Some people have great success lighting 24/7 but I have found that it’s too stressful for my plants. (non-dimmable cobs)

IMO I think plants need a little rest. Usually they get 18/6. Sometimes I run them 20/4 but at the first sign of light stress I dial it back.

I have grown in Hugos for at least 6 years, maybe longer. The best information for irrigating is here:

It is a bit complicated but forms the basis of what I actually do. I have two 2Gallon drippers on each Hugo. I have digital timers that allow 8 controlled periods in 24 hours. I measure my run-off every day to be sure I am getting 20%, a sudden drop means a clogged emitter. The minutes of run time or the run itself get edited all through the grow but this is the starting point. Some plants drink so much that I have doubled the mid-day times.

I have grown under 24/0, 4/2, 20/4, 18/6, 12/12. I personally achieved the best quality cannabis and the best ROI at 18/6 for Autos and of course 12/12 for Photos.

Good luck! :tiphat:
