Hey guys, we are just not getting consistent donations in to justify keeping the old site up with the current hosting at this point; and I am not willing to keep footing the bill to keep it up.
I am working with @Wwwillie on a solution where we can attempt to self host it on a less costly machine, but it’s becoming a major cash suck in terms of where our time and energy is spent (versus where it’s not.)
Between Discourse and the old platform, we’re at $350/month just in software hosting costs, and honestly I’d rather see that $200/month go towards THIS site, where we could potentially upgrade to the Business plan with Discourse, which would allow a tremendous amount more functionality.
I know several people here already said “send it off and let’s move forward,” but just wanted to give a general heads up that this is in motion; and that I’d like to figure out a gameplan QUICKLY. If we aren’t going to do anything with it, let’s put a bullet in this bitch, light a remembrance joint, and move on here. Just my two cents.
in my opinion, if people are not willing to foot the bill they should not be entitled to much of an opinion on it.
(I’m also not footing the bill so don’t count my opinion for too much)
The form has been around for a long time, and BOTH sites have been operational for quite some time now.
If someone was seriously interested in any of the content over there, it would not be hard for them to copy and pull the articles that they wanted to retain.

I hate to see the old site go there is a shit ton of information that’s still relevant today. maybe some of us could send a spyder program to harvest some of it. Of course the problem with that is everyone using damned phones…
i think I have a spare drive, maybe a terabyte. I’ll see what I can do.
Once that is done we can decide. I have the space to store it and the capability to spin it up occasionally. There’s 12 years of my growing life in there so I’m a bit sentimental I suppose.
I occasionally look something up in the old site, but $200 is ridiculous. Surely one of our computer nerds with a static IP could host it on an old Linux box with a free install of Apache Server. It doesn’t need much bandwidth.
If it were only that simple. Security is the biggest hurdle. I believe I have what is required but it needs to be looked at. I basically keep my networks safe by not letting anything in. . . Adding a website is really just inviting the hackers in!
