Hey everyone, I want this to be a catch-all for any questions on how to do things; things that are annoying (that may or may not be within our control, but I can look into them and at least explain,) or for suggestions on making things better as we transition into this.
We are 100% in “setting things up mode” around here, so some things are going to look a little stock, some things might still be stuck on their defaults, etc, but this is a very active an on-going project, so we’ll get things tidied up and finished up, because this is our home at the end of the day, and we’re proud to be here and starting this new journey!
OK, so I’m logged in on the new Discourse site. Hooray.
Do we lose everything from the old site?
Our thread, our grows and photos, our badges and our rep points?
I am a bit cheesed off at losing rep points again, this is not the first time our very hard earned points have been lost. Same for badges… I’ve got a few rare ones like 1lb etc, so again it will be a shame to lose them.
I have always liked AFN, buit this had better be the last time you guys change shit, you have excellent reasons for moving, but a lot of us are very resistant to change…..
Migrating the old forum to the new forum was a very costly endeavor (at minimum $6k from our quotes and expectations of the migration,) and for the most part the community at hand decided against it.
Also, migration didn’t guarantee everything translated over smoothly. And a lot of the problems we inherently had on the old site would have simply been problems we had on the new site. So there’s a little double sword there.
For now, we’re working towards putting the existing AFN site as read-only, and we’ll be redirecting the Autoflower.org domain over to this site at the end of March. We are not in a rush to delete the other site/forum by any means; it’s more of a financial strain to figure out how to keep it going for archival purposes. Since we’ve been crowd-funded (community donation) for the forum for a few years now; it’s up to the community mostly in part on how we keep things going.
As to rep; there is a new reputation system that we’ll be working on implementing, and we’ll all be starting out on the same basic level. We will have badges on the new site, and we may be able to recreate some as legacy badges for those that want them or earned them.
As to reasons for change; well my friend, life is actually about change. This is about leveling up. This is about us growing. Adapting. Shedding the shell that was getting thicker and thicker, and sure it was feeling safe and familiar, but sometimes that’s not what keeps us getting bigger. And learning. And growing. That’s just what kept us “feeling safe.” And I’m done with comfort zone. So we’re moving on from that.
We are working on work-arounds for transferring grow journals and threads over here. There’s not an easy/quick fix for it unfortunately. But we are working on it brother.
Id like to be able to edit the OP whenever I want. I plan on having one big topic with all my content there and as the topic evolves Id like to be able to update the OP.
Insert index sounds like the proper way to do what I was planning. I want to have links to certain posts. For example through out a grow I’ll be posting regular updates but they will be mixed in with all the other stuff and hard to follow. At the end of a grow I want to put all the updates together in one big post documenting the grow start to finish. Then link that big post in the OP.
I’ve only played with it a little bit; but if you edit your very first post of the topic, then click on the black circle with the + sign on it in your reply editor toolbar, there should be an option to “Insert Table of Contents.” I don’t think you’ll see that option UNLESS it’s the first post of the topic.
Then when you are using paragraph formatting (That’s the Tt icon in the toolbar,”) when you use the right heading, it will add that to the Index (or indent it on the index depending on the heading used.)
I did one for the Cultivator’s Club, here’s the index for that:
Every single on of those headings listed in the index is clickable, the link takes you directly to that spot in the 1st post.
So you could do your updates as clickable links and jump right to them. I honestly think this will be how we structure Cultivator Club testing journals (it’s sooooooooo clean!)
I want to take credit but I didnt mean to do that. I actually never noticed the index on the right until you said something just now. I just copy and paste from gemini and removed the emojis. I guess if the info is formatted right it does it automatically.
I truly believe this was the right choice moving to this. And we’re still figuring out what to do with the other site; I cannot emphasize enough that it’s not a race to delete things; just like “what can we do with all this.”
Hi Hobbes how you doing. This site is very different to the usual AFN one and I was wondering, how do you start a grow journal? any advice or info would be much appreciated as I don’t have a clue thanks
Then there should be a button in there to create “New Topic” at the top.
Then it’s pretty self explanatory from there. You upload pictures using the icon with the “up arrow” on it. If you upload a picture in your very first post; the software pulls that picture to display on the main index when users are viewing the site.
If you need ANY help, just tag me and I’ll walk you through it.
